Time to reflect on your last conversation:

  • What have your reflections been on your last meeting? (e.g. Did the discussion with the other person spark any new ideas or perspectives for you? Was there something you noticed about yourself?.)
  • Did you commit to doing anything after your last conversation? If so, did you do it, how did it go? If not, why not?

You create the environment:

As you continue to master the art of listening, we ask you to explore what is the environment you are creating for your team and what is the environment they would need to be their best selves. In your next 1to1s consider asking your team what will make them even happier, what you could do to help them feel like their environment enables them to learn, and give their best work. Make a list of the things in your behaviour that’s possibly contributing to their current environment and why it is or it is not helping your people.

For inspiration, here is an interesting article that outlines a framework about environments that truly drive human behaviour from Daniel Pink’s book.

Below are a few questions to reflect in your conversations:

  • What would your people need to be their best self each day?
  • What could be the one thing you could do already for them?
  • How might your own behaviours be affecting the current environment for your people?
  • What support would you need to try a different way?
  • Have you given your line manager the feedback about your environment and what you need?
